Morgan starts school AGAIN

Morgan started school later in the week than the rest of the kids. Due to Prep in Qld not aligning with Prep in the other states, her new school suggested that she do Prep again. In NSW it is called Kindergarten (go figure!), so she gets to start school all over again. After seeing that all they will do for the first term is learn 10 letters of the alphabet, I am holding my breath to see how Kindergarten is so far ahead of Prep in Qld, but unfortunately there is not much I can do about it now other than give Morgan extra work at home. Lachlan also, who was told that due to his age needed to repeat Grade 4 is already finding the work easy. Considering that he was never a straight A student, I am considering having a chat with his teacher to see if he can get some Grade 5 work. I am starting to disbelieve that theory that NSW and VIC are a whole year ahead of Qld in schooling. I think that maybe we just learn quicker up in Qld!!!

This is why Australia needs a common school system :-) We were fortunate with all the interstate moving we did that the only time any of us repeated was David who repeated year one when we moved to Perth, which then got him in the right age group when we moved to Victoria.

The things we look at are:
- are they with kids their age?
- what level will they be at when they are ready to re-enter the QLD system? at the grade they should be (i.e. Morgan in Yr 2 in 2012 in QLD)

(eg. if they are learning stuff that they would be learning if they were still in QLD than that is fine.)

We have noticed that all schools and styles are different though as although some things may be easy, there may be others that really challenge them (maybe...)

Otherwise there may be a problem that you would would have to supplement. Perhaps you could take examples of workbooks/ learning levels that they would have been doing if they went up a grade in QLD and check with the teachers if they will cover the same.

If not, ask the principal the basis for their current grade allocation and why NSW is behind QLD? (that will go down well :)
